Heanor Lifesavers Win Even More Welsh National Medals.
22 Gold ~ 15 Silver ~ 3 Bronze...
and a UK record.
A small squad of lifesavers from Heanor Swimming Club recently made a journey to Swansea in Wales, resulting in being awarded even more medals and National titles than the tremendous haul of 2009 at the same event.
Unlike last year, however, Heanor was not the only non-Welsh team competing, since there were representatives from Leeds, North Worcester, Derby Pheonix, Loughborough University, Crawley and Belfast Olympia, as well as a wide range of local lifesaving clubs from North and South Wales.
The event was the Stillwater Nationals organised by Surf Lifesaving Wales at the Welsh National Pool in Swansea. Just ten members of HSC made the long journey last weekend in the first of a series of National events that the club will attend in a very busy spell during coming weeks.
The Heanor squad comprised eight girls and two boys, who are pictured above at poolside in Swansea with Peter Lake the President of Surf Life Saving Association of Wales. Those Heanor members and team manager Gill Stallion were particularly delighted that every single HSC competitor received at least one first place medal (Gold) in their fantastic haul by the end of the two-day event.
The skill and strength of the Heanor Squad was particularly evident in the Rope Throw stage with Welsh National Champion titles for both individual and team categories for HSC members in the under 16 and under 19 year categories. In total the Heanor squad won an amazing total of forty medals including ten Welsh National Champion Titles, represented by twenty-two Gold medals. In a range of other events for obstacle, manikin carry and medley relay, the squad accumulated a further fifteen Silver and three Bronze medals.
Indeed, the success of the Heanor squad was finally reflected in the fact that the squad of just ten members accumulated enough points and places to earn the club a ranking of fifth place overall in competition against local and much larger lifesaving squads.
The current Heanor Swimming Club Chairman, Gareth Pilkington, commented “This medal haul in Wales serves to show both the commitment of the Heanor National Youth Squad members and the promise for success by other junior members in coming years. These fantastic results are a credit to the members and their coaches”.
